Caché (Hidden)

11 mar 06

Cache (Hidden) This weekend I saw Caché, a movie you probably haven’t seen, and, I’m guessing, probably haven’t even heard of. (Personally, I have to thank the Cinecast guys for this one. Also, everything else out right now isn’t very good.) It’s a French drama/thriller (I’d actually go with suspense) about a husband and wife who are terrorized by a series of videotapes left on their doorstep.

Georges, a TV literary reviewer, begins receiving disturbing packages containing videos of himself and his family, as well as strange drawings with no clear meaning. As the videos become more personal, Georges’ sense of desperation and menace grows, but because no clear threat has been made, law enforcement is unable to help him.

I’ll warn you: this movie (frustratingly) doesn’t really answer any of your questions; instead, it delves into issues of trust, guilt, family, and consequences of our actions. I’d recommend checking it out if you can, and pay close attention. My only complaint is that the subtitles were done in white, so they’re hard to read in a few scenes (brush up on your French). (Read more reviews of Caché.)

An image and a blockquote. I’m really digging this entry.

OFCOURSE I’ve heard of “Caché”! (But that’s probably ‘cause I live in Germany). I’ve been wanted to see it for quite some time now. Looks awesome. You know what’s really frustrating? I’ve had French since 7th grade and I know I wouldn’t understand jack without the subtitles. Blegh.

That sounds like a damn good movie! And this live preview is drool-worthy lol

It’s kind of a disappointing film from the thriller angle, but if you think about it as a criticism on the state of racism in France it’s much more successful. It’s too bad the Academy snubbed it for a Foreign Language nomination this year.

This brings to mind a problem I’m having where I can’t watch a movie anymore unless I’m doing something else. Like cleaning or folding laundry or (more realistically) gaming.

I’ve seen the trailer, will check it out.
